Prof. (Dr.) Anisur Rahman has over 26 years experience in General and Laparoscopic Surgery. He obtained MBBS degree from Dhaka Medical College in 1982; after obtaining his M.Sc in Medicine from Canada in 1986, he did his FCPS from Bangladesh in 1990 and FRCS from UK in 1995. He has special interest in Minimal Access Surgery (Laparoscopic Surgery), for which he received training from Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, UK and Gartnavel Hospital, Glasgow, UK. He regularly undertakes variety of complex surgical procedures on patients ranging from young to senior citizens.
Dr. Rahman is renowned in the country for his expertise in managing all kinds of breast pathology including breast abscess, seroma, fibroadenoma, gynecomastia (male breast enlargement) and breast cancer; he has performed thousands of breast surgeries including breast conserving surgery (Lumpectomy) and surgical removal of all part of a breast (Mastectomy). So far he has performed over 2000 breast surgeries, which includes more than 1000 Mastectomy, over 800 breast tumor surgeries and other procedures.
Further his expertise includes all kinds of surgery related to gastrointestinal system, gall bladder, bile duct and liver (hepatobiliary system), colon & rectum. He regularly practices critical surgeries like removal of the pancreatic head (Whipple's operation), removal of entire colon in case of colon cancer, anterior resection of colon, gastrectomy, etc. Major laparoscopic resections of huge cysts and tumors have also been part of his practice. Re-do surgeries by the minimal access method are Dr. Rahman's forté. He has performed a long series of revision gall bladder and bile duct surgeries, most of which were initially done in peripheral/rural centers. He commonly undertakes operation for hemorrhoids (piles) including the Longo's operation. Furthermore, he has high skills and experience in managing abdominal trauma like road traffic accidents, bullet and knife injuries.
In the last two & half decades, he has operated on over several thousands of patients at most of the largest and busiest institutes in Dhaka. Still in his mid-fifties, Dr. Anisur Rahman has participated in over 5000 laparoscopic procedures, and has made numerous oral and written presentations in different surgical forum.
Before joining United Hospital, Prof. (Dr.) Anisur Rahman worked as Senior Consultant of General & Laparoscopic Surgery Department at Apollo Hospitals Dhaka for more than 9 years. He was also a teacher in Bangladesh Medical College for 16 years.
